This project is unique in design. The Wells Branch Municipal Utility District needed to expand their existing recreation center, which included the renovation of existing classrooms, workout room, office, restrooms, and corridors, along with a conversion of the storage room into a new restroom. The approx. 11,000 SF existing building was a “U” shaped structure with a large gymnasium. With this type of structure, the best solution was to infill the center of the “U” shaped courtyard and recreate the existing roof structure to divert water around the new addition and bring the runoff to large water cisterns. The approx. 8,000 SF addition consisted of a new lobby, meeting room with an audio/video system, and classroom space. A carefully created plan combined with a flexible owner and design team and an incredibly dedicated construction team led to success even during one of the wettest years in Austin history. The project team was able to keep the gymnasium and locker rooms open for classes and church services throughout the project. Aesthetically, the use of odd angles for exterior walls at the entry, and multiple roof pitches at different elevations makes this recreation center stand out in the community. Other creative features are the use of multi-colored, circular sound panels suspended at different elevations in the lobby entry way, polished concrete floor of both existing concrete and new concrete create a unique look throughout. This project received the 2016 Outstanding Construction Award from The Austin Chapter of the Associated General Contractors (AGC).
