AHA! stands for Accessible Housing Austin! The mission is to provide affordable, accessible, integrated housing for low-income people with disabilities. It is the only non-profit in Austin led by members of the disability community. AHA! at Briarcliff is a 27-unit wood-framed apartment complex that consists of 2 three-story wood-framed buildings. Each apartment is 100% ADA accessible. There are 15 one-bedroom units, 12 two-bedroom units, an on-site laundry room, a manager's office, and a community room. Each building has a separate elevator. There are elevated walkways that connect the two buildings, so if one of the elevators is out of service, the other is available. The site for the project was going to be the second phase of the neighboring single-story apartment complex. Due to the lot size and location, we faced a few difficulties throughout the project's construction. The small size of the lot created limited space for material storage and a job trailer. Due to this limited space, the scheduling of subcontractors and materials deliveries had to be carefully considered to ensure adequate working space. Each building's footprint was designed from a setback line to a setback line to maximize the number of apartments. This Project was awarded a 4-Star rating from Austin Energy Green Building (AEGB).
